“ESCAPIST INTERIORS: PROJECTS PAST THE EDGE”

“Escapist Interiors: Projects Past the Edge”

Mangold, W, Lippmann, S. 2022 “Escapist Interiors: Projects Past the Edge” Presentation at Interior Provocations Conference, New York.

Our milieu of broken systems and restricted opportunity provides rich soil for speculation, fantasy, and escape. Teaching interior design thesis students provides a unique insight into this escapist mindset, as many projects imagine a different world. This presentation contextualized recent student work within a lineage of escapist projects from the design canon, and examined a recent flourishing in the face of existential crises of global pandemic and environmental disaster.
