PRESCHOOL DESIGN STUDIO

Preschool Design Studio

This studio, focusing on the design of a preschool for 60 students, is required for undergraduates in the interior design program at Drexel. Students are guided to understand site conditions and program requirements, especially in relation to the scale and experience of young children. The existing volume is a 5000 square foot gymnasium located at 4th and Pine Streets in Philadelphia, which requires the insertion of a second floor level to accommodate all activities. Students make visits to the site and local preschools, research topics that support design for children, and design interior and exterior spaces including four classrooms, a common activity area, and spaces for staff and services. Successful projects create unique experiences for children, connecting pedagogical models with space planning and material selection.
