FURNITURE DESIGN COURSE

Furniture Design Course

Furniture design is taught at Drexel University by a variety of faculty, introducing different techniques and fabricating a range of pieces. One version I’ve taught takes an experimental approach in which students develop a series of prototypes before selecting a piece to make. The first assignment asks students to alter an existing chair; another has them develop a series of material studies; a third requires them to support 20 books at least 6” off the ground; and the final prototype is a piece to sit on or display objects. From these, students choose one to develop and fabricate. In a number of cases the final pieces are shown at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City.
