2019 DREXEL CHARRETTE

2019 Drexel Charrette - Studio Gaon, “Re-Imagining Streets as Pedestrian Spaces”

In 2019 Drexel’s Westphal College sponsored an interdisciplinary design charrette led by Korea-based design practice Studio Gaon. The charrette proposed enhancing public life by closing selected blocks to automobile traffic in various parts of Philadelphia. Students redesigned these blocks to make them unique and appealing destinations and attract increased pedestrian flows. New streetscape features, graphic elements, public art, landscaping, street furniture and other innovations were developed by the student charrette teams. Conceiving the street as a truly public space presents profound design and cultural challenges that have the potential to remake the urban fabric.
