DECKS AND LANDSCAPES

Deck Design

In residential projects, decks often mediate between interior and exterior conditions. They are an interesting in-between place that makes visible both social interactions and construction tectonics. Decks are intended as outdoor living space: a place to gather, an invitation to join; an opportunity to unwind, a quiet spot away; a chance to get a little messy, or clean up before coming in. These intentions are visible in the size and configuration of the deck, and the degree of openness or privacy it affords. Decks are also an opportunity to shift spatial scale and orientation, opening from smaller interior spaces into larger exterior areas and towards select views of the surrounding environment. They offer a connection with nature, bringing inhabitants into contact with trees, plants, animals, or simply the ground. In the materials and details of a deck, craft and construction are often visible, revealing structure and edges in ways that conventional building typically hides.

Completed projects include a variety of urban and suburban decks, patios, and landscapes that were commissioned as design projects, and have been opportunities to consider interior-exterior experiences and connections with nature.
