42ND STREET, A MIDTOWN CROSS SECTION

42nd Street, A Midtown Cross Section

42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan—from the United Nations, Grand Central, and Bryant Park, to Times Square, Port Authority and Hell's Kitchen—presents a variety of sites, sounds, and activities that are central to the city. Much of the city's physical, economic, and cultural infrastructure is visible along this vital corridor. This course visited 42nd Street block-by-block to understand the infrastructure, buildings, street life, history, and social dynamics of this vibrant area. Students investigated a variety of topics, including buildings and organizations, activity patterns and street life, physical infrastructure, and the ecological environment.
